Participate in the Tripindi Shradh Mahapuja being performed on the auspicious occasion of Purnima Shradh, 26th September 2026, at Trimbakeshwar, for the peace, satisfaction, Sadgati and liberation of known, unknown and forgotten ancestors and departed souls of the family lineage.
Tripindi Shradh, also known as Kamya Shradh, is a significant ancestral ritual performed for departed souls who, according to traditional belief, may remain in any of the three realms, Patala Loka, Bhu Loka or Antariksha Loka, due to unfulfilled desires, unresolved karmic obligations, premature or unnatural death, incomplete ancestral rites, or when Shradh has not been performed for them for a prolonged period.
Unlike the annual Shradh performed for specific ancestors, Tripindi Shradh is traditionally performed as a one-time ritual for the collective peace and Sadgati of known, unknown and forgotten departed souls of the lineage. Through Tarpan, Pind Daan, Mantra Japa, Homa and other prescribed Vedic rites, prayers and offerings are made to nourish the departed souls, help release unresolved karmic attachments and provide them the spiritual energy required to progress on their onward journey.
Performing this Mahapuja on Purnima Shradh, the day preceding the commencement of Pitru Paksha, makes the occasion especially significant for remembering the departed, fulfilling ancestral obligations and seeking the blessings of the Pitras for peace and harmony in the family.
Tripindi Shradh involves the sacred offering of three Pindas prepared from prescribed ingredients such as barley, rice and sesame and placed upon Darbha grass. The three Pindas are offered through Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, representing the three Gunas of creation, preservation and dissolution: Rajas, Sattva and Tamas.
Tripindi Shradh is traditionally performed at Tirtha Kshetras associated with ancestral rites and liberation, such as Gaya, Varanasi, Haridwar, Trimbakeshwar and Prayagraj. Trimbakeshwar holds special significance as the abode of one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The sacred Godavari River also originates from the Brahmagiri mountains here, further adding to the spiritual importance of the Trimbak Kshetra for ancestral ceremonies.
The Puja is performed with prayers for all known, unknown and forgotten ancestors from the father’s lineage, mother’s lineage and, where applicable, the spouse’s lineage who may require peace and spiritual upliftment. It is traditionally performed once in a lifetime to fulfil ancestral obligations and seek relief from ancestral afflictions.
This is a group Mahapuja performed along with other Yajamans. While the overall Pujan, Mantra Japa and Homa are conducted collectively, the principal ancestral rites of Sankalpa, Mahavishnu Tarpan, Pitru Tarpan and the offering of three Pindas are performed individually for each participant.
Your name, Gotra and other required details are taken during the Sankalpa, and you are regarded as the Karta, or performer, of the ritual. The Puja is offered solely in your individual name under this service, and family members are not added as additional Yajamans.
The ancestral prayers themselves, however, encompass the known, unknown and forgotten departed souls of your lineage. Therefore, individual names of ancestors are not required.
Tripindi Shradh – The Sacred Offering of Three Pindas
Pind Daan is a sacred ancestral offering made in the form of Pindas. These are traditionally prepared using prescribed ingredients such as rice, black sesame seeds (Til), barley or wheat flour, ghee and holy water.
The Pinda symbolically represents the Sukshma Sharira, or subtle body, of the departed soul, and is offered with devotion to nourish the departed, assist their onward spiritual journey, grant them peace and help release lingering karmic attachments.
In Tripindi Shradh, three Pind offerings are made with reverence:
Through these three sacred offerings, prayers are made for ancestors who may remain bound by incomplete rites, unfulfilled desires, unresolved karmas or other disturbances in their spiritual journey. The Yajaman seeks their peace and Sadgati while also seeking the blessings of the Pitras for the wellbeing and harmony of the living family.
Tripindi Shradh is traditionally performed to:
